The Cross is a Crisis
Once We Know Christ's Truth, We Cannot Simply Walk Away
The trajectory of human history finds its definitive axis during these solemn days where the Passion of the Christ confronts the world with a question that permits no evasion. Unless a sudden attack of amnesia manages to strip away the collective memory of the West, we must acknowledge that this week remains the most consequential period in the entire history of the world. Everything about our perception of time, eternity, and human value changes because of the memories we recall throughout this horizon-shattering event. While many people choose to ignore the narrative through ignorance or a sense that the Gospel lacks newsworthy appeal, the story remains true and deserves a bold retelling within the context of our modern era. We are currently being invited to walk with Christ along the way of His Passion, seeking a full conformity to the shape and the texture of the wood on which the Son of God was nailed for the salvation of every soul.
This liturgical journey requires us to examine exactly where we stand in relation to the Crucified God who hangs in mortal agony before us. As we gaze upon the acutest possible suffering, we should remember the warning that we must avoid sleeping while the Lord remains in this state until the very end of the world. We find ourselves implicated in this divine tragedy because our collective iniquity and personal failings conspired to put Him there. There exists enough guilt to encompass the entire human race, meaning we should refrain from scapegoating others while ignoring the darkness within our own hearts. Although human sin remains the obvious cause of this suffering, the true catalyst has always been a love so madly consuming that it drove the Lord of bliss to bear a dreadful curse for our sake.
The Illusion of the Middle Ground
The modern world often operates under the false assumption that a person can remain neutral regarding religious and moral questions of ultimate importance. This concept of neutrality remains logically incoherent and perfectly meaningless within the framework of a Judeo-Christian worldview. To claim a state of impartiality regarding the Cross serves as a rejection disguised as a choice, because to decline the invitation to follow Him amounts to choosing the path of irreligion. The secular state that purports to stay neutral on religious matters actually makes a set of choices that effectively forecloses the possibility of honoring the Divine. Within our current faith and culture, the Cross represents a fundamental disruption to power structures that demand total allegiance from the individual.
We must recognize that the Passion demands a binary response wherein there exists no middle ground between standing with Christ and turning away from His costly love. Many people live in a state of neurotic fear, fleeing from the Cross lest it make too heavy a demand upon their comfortable lives or their social standing. This flight from the Absolute remains a hallmark of a secularism that avoids any claim on the soul that might require personal sacrifice. Rather than embracing the transformative power of the mystery, the modern mind often seeks a sterilized version of spirituality that lacks the grit and the blood of Golgotha. Nonetheless, the Cross persists as a crisis that forces every person to decide if they will stand with the Mother of God and the beloved disciple or if they will join the ranks of those who mock the Savior from a distance.
Love Over Reason: The Lesson of the Tower
Facing the pressures of state tyranny or the “dreadful curse” of cultural exile requires a resource far deeper than mere human logic. We see this reality vividly illustrated in the historical witness of those who chose the higher law over the demands of earthly kings. When Sir Thomas More sat in the Tower of London under sentence of death, his own family appealed to his sense of reason to save his life. They suggested that he had done as much as God could reasonably want by remaining silent, yet he understood that his integrity belonged to a Kingdom that transcends the temporal realm. His response that the matter was one of love rather than reason provides a template for how we should approach the demands of the Gospel today.
Reason alone fails to provide the courage necessary to face the scaffold or the social guillotine of a culture that rejects natural law. Only a “madly consuming” love for God suffices when a person must decide between the safety of a lie and the danger of the truth. This witness of Christian heroism appears throughout the pages of history, proving that participation in the divine mystery enables the believer to surmount every obstacle thrown in their way. We find ourselves in a similar position today where we must choose between the approval of the world and the fidelity required by the Cross. By looking at the example of the martyrs, we learn that the secret of grace lies in a total willingness to let go of our own security to cling to Christ.
Overturning the Empire of Indifference
The early followers of the Way did not succeed in overturning the pagan world through clever political maneuvering or social engineering. Instead, they prevailed because they possessed a complete willingness to be transformed by the mystery of the Cross and to testify to the Resurrection. Despite the ferocity of an Empire bent on their destruction, these enthusiasts refused to give way to despondency because they trusted the promise that the Lord had already overcome the world. Their conquest of the pagan gods began with their refusal to offer incense to the state and their insistence on the sovereignty of the King of Kings. This historical reality serves as a potent commentary for our own time as we navigate the challenges of a post-Christian West that often feels like a return to pre-Christian darkness.
The flashpoint of their victory was their willingness to become saints through an encounter with the living God in the life of the Church. This encounter changes everything, providing a measureless promise that no earthly power can replicate or destroy. We are currently called to put on the armor of Christ and to manifest the same courage that enabled the first Christians to weather the storms of their age. Christianity has always been a revolutionary act of divine love that takes a side against indifference and injustice. By standing squarely in front of the Cross, we participate in a tradition that has consistently broken the chains of imperial power and cultural decay.
The Absolute Claim of the Crucified
Modern secularism continues to flee from any Absolute that makes a claim on its life, yet the Cross stands as an immovable object in the path of human autonomy. The descent of the Son of God into the darkest mysteries of pain and loss reveals a divine solidarity with the helpless that no secular philosophy can match. This gratuitous act of God calls us to bear one another’s burdens with a sacrificial love that necessarily rejects the comfortable illusion of neutrality. Our participation in these high and holy days should lead us toward a deeper understanding of our identity as children of God who are no longer slaves to fear.
The Cross remains the point from which we are to live and toward which we must move if we hope to find true peace. This Holy Week, we should resolve to configure our lives to the meaning of the wood, annealed in the hope that salvation begins and ends at the feet of the Savior. We must avoid the temptation to treat this time as a mere religious holiday or a historical commemoration that carries no weight for our daily lives. Instead, let us enter into the events of the Passion with a heart ready to be shattered and rebuilt by the power of divine grace. The Cross is indeed a crisis, and the answer we give this week will determine where we stand for all eternity.
